Which is the Best Vacuum Cleaner to Buy?
The average life expectancy of a vacuum cleaner is 2-5 years. However, this also depends on the brand and how well the vacuum is maintained (e.g. cleaning the filter). Higher quality well-designed vacuum cleaners can be expected to last longer but the overall expense of purchasing one will be higher.
What to Look for in a Vacuum CleanerIf you're not sure what to look for in a vacuum cleaner it's important to ignore horsepower and amps since they don't necessarily idicate how powerful a vacuum cleaner is.
Experts state that a better indicator of whether you have a powerful vacuum cleaner is by how well designed it is, if it has good performing attachments and by how many air watts it has. They go on to say that a vacuum with more than 200 air watts (e.g. good suction power) is an indicator that it's a powerful vacuum cleaner worth investing in.
As a rule of thumb, be certain to keep your filter clean, since a blocked filter can greatly reduce the amount of air watts in your vacuum cleaner and impair how well it cleans.
Handheld Vacuum CleanersHandheld vacuum cleaners are a lazy man's vacuum cleaner. Consider these as an additional option to an upright or canister vacuum but not as a replacement.
Break these out these lightweight, portable machines when you don't want to pull out a full-sized vacuum to do some minor cleaning.
They work great for cleaning up small piles of mess on bare floors, furniture, in boats cars or RVs.
Canister Vacuum CleanersCanister vacuum cleaners are offer the same power as upright vacuums but work best for cleaning bare floors.
They also clean carpets too but tend to be less effective than upright vacuum cleaners.
So if you have hardwood flooring or other similar bare flooring predominately throughout your home, it's best to choose a canister vacuum since uprights don't do nearly as great of a job.
Upright Vacuum CleanersUprights are great for vacuuming carpet. If you're looking for a one-type-fits-all option, standard upright vacuum cleaners are a better choice than stick vacuums, because they're able to provide deep powerful cleaning.
Although it's important to mention that upright vacuum cleaners need less air watt power than canister vacuum cleaners due to the way they are built.
Stick vacuum cleaners aren't nearly as powerful and are usually only good for smaller surface jobs.
Robotic Vacuums CleanersRobotic vacuum cleaners haven't yet caught up to what humans can do. Hence, experiences will be mixed. For some households they work tremendously well and for others they're a complete nightmare.
Brands like Roomba currently have difficulty going over dark surfaces such as rugs with black or brown patterns in them. So if you have dark flooring or area rugs, you'll likely have problems with the Roomba.
Neato has been reported to have problems in rooms with reflective glasses surfaces. It's said to confuse the sensors. Additionally, robotic vacuums have been known to miss corners and edges when trying to clean a room.
Although there are plenty of bad reviews there are also plenty of good ones. So you may or may not have a good experience with using a robotic vacuum cleaner. My advice is if you want to try one out, be prepared to return it before you even buy it. Don't expect miracles.
You may even want to search for a back-up vacuum cleaner so that if your robotic vacuum cleaner isn't up to scratch, you already have another option in mind once you've returned it.
